Skin Care - it is all about a habit

Monday Feb 23, 2009

Yes you should have your daily skin care routine. And it shouldn’t sound bad. It is actually great. You will achieve fantastic results by taking care of your skin on a daily bases.

Do something every day and it won’t seems so difficult. Of course you will have to clean, tone and moisturise your skin in the morning and in the evening. But you should also do something else for your skin and your body.

One day you can exfoliate your face, another day apply moisturising mask (it is a great idea thought to these two on the same day: first exfoliation, then your mask). Ideally you should apply your mask at least twice a week. You can also choose to add clarifying mask. One day a week (or if you have very sensitive skin do it once in fortnight) should be for your body exfoliation. See my scab recipe here.

Moisturise your body every day after you had a shower or bath.

Some other day you may decide to treat yourself a deep nourishing mask for your hair. Even if it will happen only once a month - your hair will definitely benefit from it.

So what I am trying to say is that by doing something every day for your skin, for your body - you are doing a big favour for yourself. You will look better and you will feel better.

Make up your own skin care routine and enjoy the result.

Neck Skin Care - why it is so important

Monday Feb 16, 2009

You probably have heard about that: you can read woman’s age by her neck. And it is absolutely true - skin on our neck gets older before our face. That is why neck skin care is so important.

I also would add skin care for your decoltee is also very important. So often we care for our face and we forget about our neck and decoltee area. Skin on the neck and decoltee is very thin, there is almost now fat behind the skin and under skin muscles are located right bellow the skin and also very thin. As the time goes muscles can lose the elasticity, skin looses firmness and wrinkles appear.

It is very important always to wear sunscreen protection (I know I always keep repeating this but it is extremely important!). Make sure when you apply a mask on your face - remember about your neck.

You can focus on the neck separately. One of the best treatment is this: warm up a little bit of olive oil. Get a piece of muslin (or you can use a double layer of the wide bandage), soak it in the oil and apply on a clean neck, cover with cling wrap and put something around your neck. Leave for 20 minutes. You skin will be so soft and smooth after that. You can do this mask once a week.

Make sure you exfoliate your decoltee area. If you find your body scrub is a bit tough for your decoltee area - use your face scrub. Always apply some moisturiser on your decoltee after the shower (and you should do the same for the whole your body). One of the best mask for your decoltee is mask from the mashed banana. Yes, I agree it is difficult to keep it on but try as long as you can - it will pay off - you will see the immediate result - your skin is firm and so nice to touch.

If you add two of the above steps in your beauty routine now you will be thankful to yourself a few years later. Your neck and decoltee area will look so much better only because of these simple step. So make sure you care for your neck and decoltee.

Silky, Shiny Hair - my own experience

Monday Feb 9, 2009

I thought I should try myself what I recommend to others for silky and shiny hair. That is home made hair mask.

I chose the one that I read Daria Werbowy use to make her hair shinier: warm honey, egg yolk and olive oil.

I didn’t know exactly how much I should put of each ingredient but I decided that one egg yolk, about 1 tablespoon of honey (I warmed it up in microwave. Be careful though - sometimes honey tends to make scary noises if you heat it in microwave. And it doesn’t take long at all to get your honey warm), and I added about 1/2 tablespoon of olive oil.

Maybe a little bit more. So I mixed everything up, washed my hair with my normal shampoo, towel dried my hair and then applied my mask on my hair (I didn’t put any mixture to the roots though). I have long hair (not too long, but bellow my shoulders), so I just lifted all my hair up. It said that I should leave the mask for 20 minutes. Well… it started dripping after about 5 minutes, so I put cling wrap around my head (I read it actually a good idea for any mask you use for your hair) and kept it for another 5 minutes (I probably should have put a towel around my head as well, so it would stop the mixture from dripping (it still did)).

I rinsed it really well. I still could smell egg from my hair, so I washed it again with the shampoo, I applied some leave in hair conditioner to make my hair smell nice again. I think it worked well.

Verdict: yes, this mask really does work! My hair was very shiny! I was very impressed. I wonder if the rum and egg yolk mask will be even better to make my hair shiny?!

Hair Conditioners - Why Do We Need Them?

Tuesday Feb 3, 2009

I was thinking recently - do we actually need hair conditioner to be applied after washing hair with the shampoo?

So I did some research and found (as always) two opposite opinions. Some said that we don’t need hair conditioner if we don’t wash our hair every day and do not blow dry our hair. But most of the time I found that we do need hair conditioner! Bellow I posted some interesting and useful (I hope) facts:

  • Our hair are damaged by sun, dry or cold weather, dust and some other conditions, so our hair lose protein and moisture. To restore them we should include hair conditioner into our hair care routine.
  • There are different types of hair conditioners for different types of hair: for dry and damaged hair, for normal hair, for oily hair, sometimes you can find hair conditioners for curly hair and frizzy hair. Find the one that is most suitable for you.
  • There is no need to leave hair conditioner for a long time (unless it is a treatment conditioner, i.e mask). The secret is in applying and distributing hair conditioner through your hair (and it could take a long time if your have long hair). But when you have done that  - you can rinse them straight away. I actually noticed that there is no real difference if I apply conditioner for 3 minutes and then rinse it or rinse it straight away (that happens when I am a bit in a rush). There is a great article here.
  • There are three types of hair conditioners: rinse-through conditioner,  treatment or repair conditioner and leave in hair conditioner.
  • Rinse through is the most “common” hair conditioner: you apply it after your washed your hair with the shampoo. As you now know - distribute it evenly through the hair and rinse it off.
  • Treatment or repair conditioner is the one you would use once a week and leave for about 10 to 20 minutes. You can also put a towel around your head to keep your hair warm - you will get even better result.
  • Leave in hair conditioner is simply the one you would leave in your hair (you don’t rinse this conditioner off). There are conditioners that you use after washing your hair but before you would towel dry your hair or there are leave in conditioners that come in form of a spray - this is  alight high protein formula especially great for looking after combination hair (yes that is my type - dry only on the ends).
  • Make sure you never apply hair conditioner to the roots (or scalp) - there is enough moisture already.

I hope you found this article useful. Personally - I love hair conditioners - they make my hair smooth and silky. I have tried various types: leave in, rinse through and treatment hair conditioners - they are all great - you just need to find the one that suit you most.
